5 Non-Technical Founders Who Changed the Tech Landscape

Non-technical founders who prove success in tech aren’t exclusive to the tech-savvy.

The world often shines a spotlight on the technical masterminds who bring groundbreaking innovations to life. But a large group of non-technical founders, armed with an unwavering vision, determination, and a willingness to learn, have also left an indelible mark on the tech world.
Of course, building success as a non technical founder means overcoming a unique set of challenges. And how these innovators have disrupted the status quo, while navigating the fast-paced and intricate terrain of the tech industry, is a lesson for every tech startup. To build their business, non technical founders must translate their visionary concepts into actionable strategies without an in-depth understanding of the technical intricacies. They must also secure funding in an arena that often favors founders with technical expertise, build and lead diverse technical teams, and maintain a balance between their creative vision and the practical constraints of technology.

At JetRockets, we’re passionate about highlighting the stories of these non technical founders. And while this blog will delve into the accomplishments of 5 non-technical founders who’ve shattered barriers, we’re proud to work with countless others who prove every day that success in tech is not exclusive to the tech-savvy.

Here are 5 non-technical founders who exemplify the untapped potential that lies beyond the realms of coding, proving that innovation knows no boundaries.

Brian Chesky - Airbnb

Brian Chesky is the co-founder and CEO of Airbnb, the peer-to-peer room and home rental company that’s transformed the travel industry. Chesky was an industrial designer before he came up with the idea for Airbnb. In fact, it was at the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design that he met Joe Gebbia, who would eventually become his roommate and one of his co-founders.

The idea for Airbnb came to the pair when a design conference came to San Francisco in 2007 and caused all hotels in the city to sell out. They rented out their space to three visitors who couldn’t find a place to stay, offering up air mattresses and floor space.

A decade-and-a-half later, Airbnb is a tech unicorn valued at over $80 billion (as of August 2023) and Chesky is one of the richest tech founders in the U.S.

Evan Sharp – Pinterest

Evan Sharp is one of the co-founders of Pinterest, the popular social media platform that focuses on visual discovery and sharing. Sharp studied architecture at Columbia University and received a Master of Architecture degree. His background in architecture played a significant role in shaping the visual and design-focused aspects of Pinterest.

As a co-founder, Evan Sharp has been instrumental in shaping Pinterest's overall vision and strategy. His understanding of design principles and visual communication helped Pinterest stand out in a crowded social media landscape. He was also highly involved in various aspects of product development and innovation at Pinterest, driving the platform’s design, user interface, and overall creative direction until his departure from the company.

Despite his non technical background, Sharp is now widely recognized and celebrated for his contributions to the tech and design communities. He was once nominated by Apple’s former Chief Design Officer, Jony Ive, in WIRED as a technology leader who will shape the future of the internet for the next 25 years. Interestly, Sharp now works for Ive at his design firm, LoveFrom, although he remains an advisor and board member at Pinterest.

Anne Wojcicki – 23andMe

Anne Wojcicki is a prominent entrepreneur known for co-founding 23andMe, a biotechnology company that offers direct-to-consumer genetic testing and personalized genomics services. She founded the company in 2006 with Linda Avey and Paul Cusenza to provide the general public access to their genetic information.

Although Wojcicki didn’t have a technical background before launching 23andMe, she did have the biology expertise. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology with honors from Yale University, and spent her years post graduation working as a healthcare analyst on Wall Street.

Wojcicki’s leadership skills and strategic vision has been crucial in shaping 23andMe's direction. Her journey exemplifies how a non technical background, combined with a strong educational foundation and entrepreneurial drive, can lead to innovative breakthroughs and the establishment of successful companies in the tech and biotech sectors.

Since its launch, 23andMe has had a significant impact on the field of genetics and personalized medicine. The company's DNA testing kits have allowed millions of individuals to learn about their genetic heritage and potential health risks. Additionally, 23andMe has contributed data to scientific research and drug discovery, and its collaboration with law enforcement agencies has even led to several breakthroughs and arrests in high-profile crime cases.

Whitney Wolfe Herd – Bumble

Whitney Wolfe Herd is best known for co-founding the popular dating app Tinder and later founding Bumble, a female-focused dating app and social networking platform.

Wolfe Herd attended Southern Methodist University, where she studied International Studies. Her educational foundation provided her with a broader perspective on cultural dynamics and interpersonal relationships, which later influenced her work in the dating app industry.

Wolfe Herd’s initial role at Tinder was as Vice President of Marketing. She was instrumental in creating the app's branding and marketing strategies, contributing to its rapid growth and user engagement.

She founded Bumble just months after resigning from her role at Tinder in 2014. Bumble differentiated itself by giving women the power to initiate conversations in matches, aiming to create a safer and more empowering space for online dating. The company has since expanded beyond dating to include other features like Bumble BFF (for finding friends) and Bumble Bizz (for professional networking). This diversification helped Bumble attract a wider user base and positioned it as a comprehensive social networking platform.

Whitney Wolfe Herd’s accomplishments as a non technical founder have been widely recognized. She has been featured on Forbes' list of "30 Under 30" and TIME's list of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2021, she became the youngest female CEO to take a company public in the United States when Bumble went public.

Wolfe Herd's journey underscores how a non technical background, combined with creativity, strong vision, and determination, can lead to the creation of successful tech companies that address important social and cultural issues.

Jennifer Hyman and Jenny Fleiss – Rent the Runway

Technically, these female founders bring our list to six success stories. Jennifer Hyman and Jenny Fleiss are the co-founders of Rent the Runway, an ecommerce platform that allows users to rent, subscribe, or buy designer apparel and accessories.

The duo’s non technical background didn't deter them from creating an innovative tech platform that’s disrupted the fashion industry. Their story — from their first ‘aha’ moment to a subscriber base of 145,000 people — is finely detailed on the company’s website.

The pair were Harvard Business School classmates — Fleiss from the finance world and Hyman from sales and marketing. The idea for Rent the Runway was born one Thanksgiving break from college, when Hyman’s sister showed off a $2,000 designer dress she bought for a wedding. A dress that was sending her into credit card debt! She returned to HBS and shared the idea of renting designer items with Fleiss.

After a lot of hustle, testing the waters, and meetings, the site finally launched on November 10th, 2009. Since then, the company has built one of the most sophisticated tech stacks in the country while developing processes and technological infrastructure for its reverse logistics shipping system.
